The golden run for the host country continued on Day 3 of the Commonwealth Games 2010. Medals were pouring in from all the quarters. Wrestling, shooting and weightlifting all proved to be medal-winning disciplines for India. With various wins on the third day, India remained successful in retaining her second spot in the medal tally.
On Day 3, India pocketed a total of five gold medals. Out of these three were in the shooting discipline alone. The golden players of the day were Gagan Narang, Omkar Singh, Anisa Sayyed, Renu Bala Chanu and Rajender Kumar. Gagan Narang won gold after winning in the 10 meters air rifle event. He defeated countryman and Olympics gold medalist Abhinav Bindra.
Narang was on top in the final round of the shooting. He shot a best of 103.6. It was preceded by a perfect 600 in the qualifying rounds. This meant it was a Commonwealth Games record of 703.6 as also his personal best. Bindra won the silver as he shot to a score of 698. In the qualifying stage too, Abhinav Bindra stood second with 595 points.
Omkar Singh and Anisa Sayyed gave two more gold medals in the pistol shooting event. Omkar Singh won gold in the 50m pistol event. His score then read a comfortable 653. 6. But, for once it seemed, Dr Karni Singh shooting range belonged only to India in the Commonwealth Games 2010. Anisa Sayyed won the gold in the women’s 25 meter pistol event. This was the second gold for Anisa who hails from Pune, Maharashtra. Anisa scored a remarkable 203.8 in the final round. This took her tally to 786.8. With this score, she set a new Commonwealth Games record as well.
The silver in the same event went to her partner Rahi Sarnobat with whom she had won a gold on Tuesday. Her final score read 781. Shooters Ranjan Sodhi and Asher Noria brought in the silver for India. They won the medal in the double trap pairs event. They missed the gold by a whisker. Their tally of scores read 188 points while that of England, who won the god scored 189 points.
In the weightlifting Swati Singh was a big disappointment. It was not that she fared badly, but the untimely cramps did her in. However, Renu Bala Chanu ensured India did not miss her services by a huge margin. It was Renu Bala Chanu who won the first gold for India in weightlifting. She had participated in the 58kg snatch event.
However, in all the events and matches in Commonwealth Games 2010 until now, the match between Rajender Kumar and Azhar Hussain proved to be the most thrilling. The bout was in the 55kg category. Rajender Kumar was no match for Azhar. In the opening period itself, Rajender had taken an unbeatable lead of 5-0.
The Pakistani wrestler literally broke Rajender’s nose with blood oozing out. However, it gave Rajender even more confidence to come out victorious. It gave India yet another gold for the day.
