Golden Day for India At The Commonwealth Games 2010

abhinav-bindraWithout doubt, Day 2 of the Commonwealth Games 2010 proved to be golden day for India, literally. On one hand India won not one, not two, but five gold medals in one single day. On the other hand, there was miracle of sorts for Team India in cricket as they defeated the mighty Aussies in the first Test Match.

Continuing with the Commonwealth Games, it was a big day for India. Most of the senior and prominent players came to the party. Apart from the two gold medals, India pocketed a couple of silver medals as well. Indian shooters and wrestlers brought glory to the country. With the second day’s wins, India is now placed behind Australia in the medal tally at number two.

It was the team of Olympian gold winner Abhinav Bindra with World Champion Gagan Narang, who won the first gold medal for India in the 10m air rifle event. The two champion shooters aggregated 1193 – a record in itself. The duo had fired to the score of 1189 in Melbourne in the previous Commonwealth Games.

Gagan Narang was running short of luck before entering the Commonwealth Games 2010. However, he came out of nowhere to shoot a super impressive score that read – 99, 100, 100, 99, 100 and 100. Gagan rode on the cozy total of 598. The gold medalist in the Beijing Olympics, Abhinav Bindra’s series too was out of this world. His series was 100, 98, 99, 100, 99 and 99. Abhinav aggregated 595.
Another gold medal came India’s way in the Commonwealth Games 2010, courtesy Rahi Sarnobat and Anisa Sayyed. They won the gold in the women’s category. It was the 25m pistol event. They impressed one and all with their score of 1158.

The golden run for India continued thereafter as well. Three more gold medals were waiting to be won. Gold medals were highly expected in the wrestling category. The Indian wrestlers stood by their names to show the world what they are made of.

Three gold went to Anil Kumar, Sanjay Kumar and Ravindar Singh. The three musclemen bagged golds in the 96 kg, 74 kg and 60 kg Greco-Roman category respectively. In his match, Ravindar Singh was the clear favorite. Actually, it was Ravindar Singh who brought the first gold medal India’s way, in wrestling. It was a second round fall to finish 9-0. Anil Kumar and Sanjay Kumar were not to be left behind.

The second day saw two silvers for India as well. The first of them went to Deepak Sharma and Omkar Singh. They won the silver in the men’s 50m pistol pairs event. The second silver went to the pair of Tejaswini Sawant and Lajja Gauswami. They won the medal in the women’s pairs 50m rifle 3 position.

India could not have asked for more. The host country, in the real sense, has got the momentum going. One thing to watch out for is complacency. If the players overcome it, they can overcome all their opponents.
